The Central Expressway Section-2 is a combination of selected segments of previously proposed two possible alignments. The segment from Kadawata to Gampaha remains the same alignment of original proposal [Colombo – Kandy Alternate Highway (CKAH) trace (2001 – 2011)] and beyond Gampaha, the alignment is the Northern Expressway trace (2011 – 2014) up to Dambulla and to Kandy via Galagedara. In 2015 a policy decision was taken to change the original name of Northern Expressway to Central Expressway.Construction of 39.29km long four lane Expressway split into four Packages namely Mirigama – Riloluwa (9.71km), Riloluwa – Rangallepola (10.2km), Rangallepola – Maditiyawela (10.88km) and Maditiyawela – Kurunegala (8.5km). The expressway has two links, one is to Ambepussa, which is included to this section and other link is at Pothuhera for Kandy expressway.

Initial outer 4 lane expressway comprises of each 3.6m wide lanes, 2.5m wide outer hard shoulder, 0.75m wide inner hard shoulder and 0.75m verge on either side with 2.0m wide center median. Construction of embankments, cutting and sub structures of bridges, viaducts etc. where 6 lane facilities is required in future, will be with the provision for expanding to
