The project assists the Government of Sri Lanka in its efforts towards mitigating water resources management challenges. Component 2 of the World Bank funded Dam Safety and Water Resources Planning Project (DWRPP) is intended to strengthen the Hydro-meteorological Information system (HMIS) in Sri Lanka. This system will result from strengthening hydro meteorological data collection and collation; implementing a robust and current database in the Hydrology Division of the Irrigation Department responsible for surface water monitoring, analyzing and forecasting; and establishment of a core groundwater observation network in critical areas.
Under Component 2 of the DSWRPP there are five sub components as follows: (a) Establishment and upgrading of 50 hydrometric stations, (b) establishment of a database at the relevant Implementing Agencies; (c) Improvement of analytical capability of relevant Implementing Agencies (d) establishing procedures and provide tools and training for real-time analysis of flood situations for the streams of selected reservoirs and (e) establishment of a groundwater monitoring system.
