NEIAP – Productivity Enhancement Studies of Major Irrigation Settlement Schemes – Northern Province and Border Districts 

The objective of the NEIAP (North East Irrigation Agriculture Programme) is to conduct a productivity enhancement study in order to formulate a short and long term strategy to upgrade income generating opportunities of the population that are centered on the Irrigation Settlement Schemes of the Northern Province and its border districts

In keeping with the terms stipulated our Consultants initially familiarized themselves with local conditions in order to take them into account in the preparation of the study. Baseline studies and preliminary surveys are being carried out in the following areas:

Scheme 1 –  Padaviya Irrigation Settlement Scheme

Scheme 2 –  Pavatkulam Irrigation Settlement Scheme

Scheme 3 –  Giant Tank Irrigation Settlement Scheme

Scheme 4 –  Iranamadu Tank Irrigation Settlement scheme

Scheme 5 –  Thinnimurippu Tank Irrigation Settlement Scheme 

The study being prepared would be a proposal for improving the standard of living of the rural households of the area where the irrigation settlement schemes are situated in a sustainable manner. The proposal will focus on strategies and measures that will increase farm production and income of the households, enhance land and water productivity of the scheme that includes the watershed area, irrigation and drainage systems and agricultural activities in home gardens; inland fisheries, livestock, institutional development upgrading marketing, extension and credit systems and the role of the private sector in order to create a more productive and profitable agricultural production system.
